Architectural millwork is where a cabinetmaker earns the word craftsman. The Oakdale shop has built an arched mahogany entry door set with glass rondels, carved and strap-hinged oak doors under stone Gothic arches, French doors, replacement window sash for historic houses, shutters with pine-tree cut-outs, linenfold panelling, corbels, columns and miles of moulding matched to century-old profiles.
On Long Island, with its stock of Victorian, Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts houses, that means restoration as often as new work: remaking what rotted, matching what survived, and building the new parts so that nobody can tell.
Every piece is made to measure from solid wood, primed or finished in the shop, and hung or installed by Chris on site.
Questions
Before you ask
- Can you reproduce a door or window that no longer exists?
- Usually, from a surviving example, an old photograph or the ghost lines left in the frame. Historic reproduction is a specialty of the shop.
- Do you work with architects and contractors?
- Yes. Much of the millwork is built to architects’ drawings and delivered to a general contractor, and Chris will site-measure and install when asked.
- What about exterior woodwork and weather?
- Exterior doors, sash and shutters are built in mahogany, white oak, cedar or Accoya, with proper joinery, drainage and finish so they last on the south shore.
