The craft
Joinery you can see, and joinery you can’t.
Chris Demchak builds the way the old shops did: from rough lumber, with hand-cut joints, fitted doors and drawers, and finishes rubbed out by hand. The work ranges from a single chair to a whole kitchen, from a carved oak door under a Gothic arch to a mail-room counter hewn from a solid timber.
Most of it lives in homes and institutions around Long Island, New York City and New England. All of it was made to be used hard and handed down.

The studio
From the artist colony on the Connetquot
The shop is in Oakdale, on the south shore of Long Island, in the old artists’ colony beside the Connetquot River where painters, boatbuilders and woodworkers have kept studios for a century. It is the right place for slow work: quiet, close to the water, and full of old houses that still need craftsmen.
